As
an artist, I explore the connections between ideas. Archetypes and symbols
represent ideas, establish connections, and are grounded in the fundamental
reality that unites us with our history.
Because
I seek connections, I work in series. Each painting in a series presents a new
set of problems to solve as I explore the content from a different perspective.
Much of my work is concerned with aging, the cycles of life, and our hopeless
battle with the passage of time. I study archetypes and use concrete imagery as
symbols to express my thoughts about these subjects.
As a result of the ongoing struggle between the things I can control in life and
the things I cannot control, there is a tension in my work. I build on the
controlled accident and follow where it leads me. What drives the series and
fuels the tension is the realization that I am never “there” yet. I’ve never
quite said what I’m ultimately trying to say; but along the way I touch on it,
and I learn something from my efforts. Falling short of the mark keeps me
engaged.
I don’t want anyone to get comfortable with my work; I want it to be
provocative. My favorite reaction is, “Scary, but beautiful.” If I can move the
viewer to think about why the work evokes that reaction, I will be getting
closer to what I am trying to do.
